The Wall rewards an early alarm.
The first cable car at Mutianyu goes up around eight, and for roughly an hour you get twenty-two watchtowers and a forested ridge almost to yourself. Coaches from the city arrive from about eleven. Every tour below is judged on the one thing that decides the day: what time it actually leaves.

An hour out, and the country changes.
Bullet trains do most of the work. Suzhou is twenty-five minutes from Shanghai and full of canals; Hangzhou is under an hour and mostly lake. From Beijing the road runs to the Ming Tombs, the wild wall at Jiankou, and back before dark.

The Forbidden City on the morning you land, while the jet lag still gets you out early. Tiananmen Square and the Temple of Heaven the day after, the Wall on day three when the forecast is clearest.

Out early, at the pits by mid-morning, back in the walled city for the afternoon. Hire a bicycle on the ramparts, then eat your way down Beiyuanmen once the lamps go on.
